Microsoft blocked Tiananmen ‘tank man’ images on Bing search

Microsoft briefly blocked images of the Tiananmen Square “Tank Man” from showing up on its search engine Bing on the 32nd anniversary of China’s infamous crackdown on pro-democracy dissidents.

The iconic image from 1989 shows a solitary, unknown person staring down a column of tanks as they rolled out of the square.

The company blamed “accidental human error” as the reason why users in the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore were unable to find images of the historic photo, Reuters reported.

The image, and much of the history of the event itself, has been all but erased from official memory within mainland China.

US-based search engines and social media companies regularly comply with censorship demands from the ruling Communist Party as part of the price of operating in the country.

As many as 10,000 people died in the massacre.
